Wing motion:
Flies, which are not birds of course, can fly in all directions and can
hover as well. That is because the motion of their wings is dynamically
similar to that of a helicopter. Their compound eyes are like turrets
and they can see 360 degrees around the base of the "turret".
Birds have wing motions that are a combination of rowing and lifting,
so their motion is forward.
If birds had eyes on both ends of their body
they probably would have evolved flying motions similar to those of the fly.
